Death Finds a Way A Janie Riley Mystery Book 1 edition by Lorine Schulze Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I just finished reading Lorine McGinnis Schulze's first novel Death Finds a Way, and I have to say that I did not want it to end. I wanted Janie to keep researching and interacting with the other characters in the novel, so I could keep reading! I think the author did a phenomenal job with her first book. I don't know much about genealogy but it did not matter. It was very interesting to learn while reading about how genealogy research is done. I don't usually read mystery novels but loved this one because it was easy to follow and had me guessing but not too much, enough so that my mind was engaged but not overwhelmed. I hope the next book is longer so I can stay in Janie's world a little longer too. She is a great character and I really came to be fond of Janie over the course of the book. She reminds me of a very good friend of mine so I felt very comfortable and at home with Janie. Reading this book was like curling up on the couch with a good friend. I look forward to the next...

Death Finds a Way A Janie Riley Mystery Book 1 edition by Lorine Schulze Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

As an avid reader of mystery novels, it is refreshing to find a new series with a unique protagonist, Janie Riley. As well as being treated to a good story, I learned a great deal about genealogy. Genealogists truly are master detectives. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
Couldn't finish. Can't understand all the great reviews. Mindless ramblings, uninspired plot, and contrived coincidences. Please tell me that the red sandals actually had a purpose later on in the story and she didn't actually describe them for the better part of an entire page for no reason...
I loved this book. Since I am a genealogist, I enjoyed hearing about her techniques and places for finding information and following her thought processes.
Being an active genealogist, I bought this book. As I read I found a good mystery with a genealogy twist. I read this book quickly, the story is plausible and the characters are well developed.
I will be looking for more books by this author.
I had high hopes for this book after reading another genealogic series by another author. However, this plot seemed very forced and predictable. Some pieces of it just didn't make sense or ring true. I feel the author needed to do some more work on this manuscript before self-publishing it.
The nerdy amateur genealogists possess a determination that surpasses all. Even today in the digital world. As one myself, I was expecting digging deeper into the library of Congress, learning scandals, which we often do. So why was I disappointed with the death of the hired genealogist sitting next to our heroines? Maybe because the heroine herself solved a murder but didn't find what she had paid a week long trip to find out more about - her own great grandmother. Maybe it was the two worlds the married couples live in where he could smile and nod at her discoveries and then leave for France for urgent business which sounded like another woman beckoning him near. The romance didn't work. Especially she seemed more interested in a handsome Native American private investigator, than her husband abandoning ship so she could conveniently solve her case without his dear, you are not a detective so quit pretending that you are seeing clues at every turn. It was fun but disappointing. As someone who has been in those hallowed halls, I think I could have found a secret pamphlet in a well circulated book that cast a shadow on a long family history. Or at least save the old house from demolishing. Or planted a tree.
As a 28 year genealogist and family historian and a longer time reader of mysteries, I definitely enjoyed this book. The setting in Salt Lake City and the descriptions of the hotel, library, and local restaurants invoked good memories of my visits there. The various mystery clues were presented in a way the reader might guess what would happen next and predict "who done it". But some surprising twists enhanced the story line and offered some surprises. I might have preferred a less conflicting, and more supporting, relationship between the heroine and her husband -- more like that with the detective, but this leaves room for growth in the next Janie Riley book. It should be noted that even a non genealogist would enjoy this mystery. Lorine McGinnis Schulze has produced a great first time mystery book and I am looking forward to future Janie Riley stories.
